The College:

Stella Maris College, a Catholic institution of higher education for  women, is an autonomous college affiliated to the University of Madras. Through its dedication and commitment to the field of education it has grown into an institution of national repute with over 3300 students. Presently the college offers 13 undergraduate, 12 post-graduate programmes and also research programmes such as M.Phil., Ph.D. in few departments.

The Department of Economics:

The Department of Economics was started in the year 1948 and offers UG, PG and M.Phil programmes. The department specializes in Human Resource Development. In the 58 years of its existence, the department has come to be duly recognized for imparting quality education. the curriculum has been periodically updated to include current trends and contemporary issues in this field of knowledge. with the firm belief that education extends beyond the classroom, the department undertakes minor research projects and organizes workshops and seminars periodically.

The Seminar:

The Indian economy has indeed forged ahead in terms of economic growth since the’s 1980's and it cannot be denied that India has emerged  as one of the world’s  fastest growing economies.  Endowed with a rich heritage, a  young population , enviable resources. India  seems to have  a bright future  on the economic  front. Further , India also  has the distinction  of acquiring considerable  economic growth within  the framework of  a democracy. Growth however has not encompassed  all sectors of the Indian economy uniformly. The ‘service specific’growth instead of reaching out to all has only augmented the inequalities in all the sectors . The growing  economy has not  delivered the core  public services such  as healthcare , education , power , water and infrastructure to all its citizens. A  great  divide exists between rich and poor , urban and rural, men and women, bourgeoisies and the proletariat , upper and lower castes and higher and lower classes.

Objective

The question that stares us in the face is growth for whom?

With this question in mind the department is organizing a national seminar inviting the academic community to participate in this concern. The objective of the seminar is to study the impact of economic growth on the various sections of the Indian population in terms of the losers and the gainers. The seminar seeks to address and discuss the following issues:

  • Ideology and paradigm of development and growth.
  • Development divides within and between agriculture, industry, service and foreign trade.
It is important that as a country we learn to walk on two legs, one embracing the process of high growth and the other on economic development to the marginalized.”

Dr. Manmohan Singh
