In order to preserve that tradition, we had taken a step forward that had resulted in the organization of the most happening event of the Computer Science Department “Wizit 2k7” which was held on the 29th of January, 2007.

To ensure that a balance is struck between the academics and the corporate world which is competitive, we had invited reputed professionals like Mr. Suresh Kumaraswamy (AGM, HCL) and Ms. Hema Gopalan (Vice President, TCS) for the inaugural session.

With the intention of taking the battle of minds to a higher level, a whole lot of intellectual and challenging competitions had been incorporated to sharpen the skills and talents of the student community.

National Conference

The Department of Computer Science, Stella Maris College (Autonomous), Chennai organized a National Conference on “Network Security” on Feb 16th, 17th, 2007, as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the college. The theme of the conference “‘Network Security” is the current issue in the IT industry. The rapid development in networking is positioning “‘Network Security” more seriously than ever as a major topic of discussion. It not only brought together eminent speakers from reputed organizations but also emphasized the need of network security in this “Information age”.

WIZIT 2006

To compete with the rapid growth of technology, it is vital that an open and co-operative environment is created for the exchange of knowledge in computer and computer related technologies. With the aim of reaching this goal, the management, staff and students of Department of Computer Science , Stella Maris College, Chennai had conceived the idea of hosting an event titled “WIZIT”

Seminars

Informative and effective seminars about the Latest trends in I.T industry are offered to the students of the department at regular intervals. This is done primarily to encourage student learning of the advanced I.T concepts.

Campus Recruitment

One prominent feature of the department is the ‘Campus recruitment’ programme where several prominent IT firms offer placements for the out-going students of Msc.IT and BCA.

Industrial Visits

Our Post graduate students are taken to IT companies in order to enhance their practical knowledge and get a better exposure in their field.

The following are the highlights of some of the visits by our students:

Industrial Visit to Maples ESM Technologies.
The II years of M.Sc Information Technology visited Maples ESM technologies , a company working on both software development and training. Maples is a company which is running on Mainframes and is a rare phenomenon in today's context. But the students had the opportunity to have a look at the mainframe environment and the students were given a lecture on the working of it .So they could greatly benefit by getting to see a concept which was only learnt theoretically.

Industrial Visit to the clearing house of Reserve Bank of India.
The II years of M.Sc Information Technology visited the clearing house of Reserve Bank of India. Reserve bank has automated its entire work on mainframes and uses some unique machines for its clearing process. The students learnt about cheque clearing and had a very rare opportunity to see the usage of sorters which is a machine used in the clearance process.

Highlights and achievments of the Department of Computer Science Academic Year 2004-2005

Placements.

Till date, more than 40% of PG students have been given offer letters by ITES companies
Till date, more than 60% of UG students have been given offer letters by ITES companies.
More placements will be considered by the department by mid of April.

Aishwarya - Selected for the National level Inter University Table Tennis Championship

BCA III Year

R.Indira Priyadarshini - Participated in All India level Basket ball tournament.

Department Library
The Computer Science department has an up-to-date departmental library.The library has a number of computer journals, software CD's, computer text books and daily news papers

In the Computer department, there are more than 150 nodes with LAN network and there are two well-equipped computer laboratories
