DIGITAL REVOLUTION- TOWARDS THE CREATION OF A JUST SOCIAL ORDER

Seminar organised by UNNATHI the social work students’ forum, Department of social work, Stella Maris College (Autonomous), chennai-600086 On January 20-21, 2006, Venue-01

CONCEPT NOTE

Digital divide means advancement in Information and communication Technology (ICT) through digital revolution, which has not brought about equitable growth in society. It has strengthened the hands of the powerful while the marginalised have hardly received the benefits of the digital revolution.:

Technological advancement has made the powerful more influential and enhances their domination resulting in the marginalising further, the powerless. The discourse that the powerful construct, by using technology to their advantage results in unequal relations of power and social hierarchy. Any social growth should be aimed at reaching the people who are at the periphery of society to create a just social order.

The seminar aims to draw attention to the ways the tools of information and communication technology could be directed to the periphery of the Indian society.

Topics for discussion include:

  • The Powerful Information and Communication Technology and the Powerless Subalterns
  • Information and Communication Technology and Rural Women
  • Information Technology and Human Development
  • Digitalised Information and Eradication of Illiteracy
  • Digitalised Information and Democratic Values
  • Digital Divide and Human Rights
  • Social Agencies in bridging the Digital Divide
