Admission

To qualify for a Master’s Degree in International Studies must necessarily complete a minimum of 84 credits for core courses, elective courses and value education. The faculty and administration have through combined effort, developed an academic programme of quality involving varied innovative methods of teaching and evaluation.In addition to regular lectures there are also guest lectures,assignments,audio-visual presentations,seminars and group discussions .


Eligibility for admissions:

A candidate is required to have a Bachelors’s Degree in any discipline of the University of Madras or any recognized university accepted as equivalent by the syndicate of this university with a minimum of 50% marks. The candidate has to be proficient in English language with an aptitude for the subject and should possess analytical abilities.

Duration of the Programme:

The duration of the course is two academic years consisting of Four Semesters of study for a Master’s degree. A semester is 90 working days.In order to be eligible for the award of the degree the candidate should have successfully completed the course within four years reckoned from the date of enrolment for the first semster of the course.The course timings are from 12.05 pm - 5.05 pm.

Academic Records required For Admission:

The student must submit the following official records in ORIGINAL

Transfer Certificate from the Institution last studied
Conduct certificate
X standard Statement of marks
Higher Secondary Statement of marks or its equivalent
Bachelor’s Degree Statement of Marks or Cumulative Marks statement (in case of students from autonomous    college)
Bachelor’s Degree Provisional Certificate issued by the University
Eligibility Certificate from the University of Madras(in case of candidates form other Universities)
Community certificate in case of MBC/OBC/DNC/BC/SC/ST

The Name of the Candidate and date of birth should be identical in all the original certificates original transfer and conduct certificates produced at the time of admission will not be returned under any circumstances.Higher secondary or its equivalent cenrtificate will be returned at the end of the First Year. Provisional Eligibility Certificate should be obtained from the University of Madras (for other Universities only).

Letter of Reference:

Candidates are advised that they must submit a Letter of Reference on the form entitled ‘Letter of Reference’ along with the application. The Letter of Reference must be obtaianed from the Head of the Department.A faculty member of the Department last studied or from a person of professional standing who has known the candidates for at least three years.

Other Information:

Provisionally selected candidates from the M.A. Degree Programme in International Studies will be called for an    interview and written test.
The written test will consist of objective type questions and short answers and will focus on current affairs and     general knowledge as well as proficiency in english.
Receipt of an Interview Card does not guarantee admission
Requests for deferring the date of interview will not be considered
No Information will be sent to the candidates who have not been selected for the interview and written test
Admission cards are valid only on the date specified there in.On or before this date,admission cardholders must    pay the prescribed fees together with their academic records.


Application:

Application can be purchased from the Indian Overseas Bank,Extension counter,Stella Maris College, 17 Cathedral Road,Chennai 600 086. Applications would be issued from Mid April through May every year. The entrance test would be conducted in the first week of June every year. ** Every student is expected to take a minimum of two courses of 3 credits each or according to the requirement    of their department.

Value Education

Catholic Doctrine/Ethics/Scripture. All PG students are expected to earn 2 credits over two years.

Testing & Evaluation

Evaluation of Students is based on both continous assessment (CA) and end semester examinations. Equal Weightage (50% each) is given to continous assessment and end semester examiantion. A student will be permitted to take the end semester examination provided she has minimum attendance of 75% per course and has completed the CA requirments of tests/assignments/seminars/project work etc. For the conduct of the End semester Examination and evaluation of Dissertation, external examiners will be appointed. The end semester examination will be in the form of a comprehensive written examination of three hours duration for each course,at the end of each semester.

Passing Requirement

A candidate will be declared to have passed in any paper (including internship/dissertation) if she secures not less than 50% of marks, (the continous Internal Assessment and the end semester examination put together) provide a minimum of 45% of marks is secured in the end semester examinations. She should have passed all the prescribed papers as in the syllabus for the award of the degree.

60% and above but below 75%	       First Class


50% and above but below 60%	       Second Class
Only those candidates who have passed all the papers including Internship & Dissertation in the first appearance are considered for ranking.


Procedure in the event of failure:
  1. If a candidate fails in a particular subject (other than internship and dissertation) she may appear for the end semester examination in that subject in subsequent semesters and obtain pass marks.
  2. In the event of failure in internship/Dissertation,the candidate will register for them again and redo the report/dissertation and resubmit the same afresh for evaluation. The internal assessment marks will be freshly alloted in the case.
