The International Studies Club:ISC

The department aims at providing a platform for the all round development of its students.The IS club aims at providing an old time English coffee house culture by infusing in the students a love for not just classroom learning but for intellectual socializing as well. The idea is to invite the students to think, analyze and write critically about several contemporary issues .It also persuades them to debate and deliberate on issues of substance. The club also hosts several informal discussions with resource persons from different departments within the college and also from outside.

There also regular screening of relevant documentaries and also some exceptional classics of world cinema related to any of their subjects. Some of the movies screened are ‘Fahrenheit’ on the 9/11 bombings, ‘Hotel Rwanda’ on the Rwandan Genocide, ‘The Thin Red Line’ a World War II movie on the Battle of Guadalcanal etc.The club has also conducted innovative programmes such as an UN Security Council simulation on the “extension of the Mandate of the UNMIA “ coordinated by Ms.Anupama Shekar a former Student of the department.Debates, quiz programmes and student interactions are also regular features of the club.Such varied exposure provides them the much-needed perspectives from outside and also the interest to experiment with different ideas and mediums.


There have been several guests who have initiated discussions for the club:

Mr.Ramachandran Sundaralingam– An Interpol Narcotics and Drugs expert inaugurated the activities of the    club and spoke on “Global Drug Trade and Abuse” on 1 September 2004.

Mr.Ishtiaq Ali Mekhri, Sub Editor of the Daily Dawn a Karachi based Newspaper spoke on “Peace With India    Pakistani Perspective”on 4 October 2004.

The first club lecture for the year 2005 was delivered by Mr.Zahid Shahad Ahmed a Pakistani research     Scholar spoke on “Teachers Attitude and Practice towards the Indo Pak Conflict” on 15 July, 2005.

Dr.H.S.S.Nissanka from Colombo spoke on“Diplomacy and Sri Lankan Foreign Policy” on 13 September, 2005.

Mr.Tenzin Tsundue, General Secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress and a Poet spoke on" Free Tibet     Movement" on 6 January, 2007.

Dr.V.Padma, Faculty of the English Department,Stella Maris College, interacted with the students on “Art and    Culture and International Relations” on 5 February 2007.

Dr.Swarna Rajagoplan of Chaitanya Foundation spoke on “Entrepreneurship and International Relations” on 9    March,2007.

The I & II M.A students organised an interaction on "Terrorism" on 10 September ,2007

FOCUS the newsletter

The club has launched its own newsletter called “Focus” which serves as its creative space and a platform for the students to voice their opinions and write critically on several issues. There is an editorial board comprising of representatives from both the I and II year M.A.and a faculty member who serves as the editor .The team decides on a theme for every issue and there are contributions in the form of articles,interviews, book reviews and political analyses of various current affairs.This newsletter is entirely a student endeavor and the students work on the creative and technical aspects to publish this annual newsletter. The students have proved their critical journalistic capabilities and their exceptional layout and artistic skills to make every issue interesting, invigorating and wholesome. In order to provide more audience the opportunity of reading this newsletter the department has decided to launch it online as an e-newsletter from this year onwards.
