Mathematics

The department of Mathematics established in the year 1951, focuses on

·        Pure, applied and applicable mathematics

·        Effective teaching, learning and evaluation

·        Involvement in research activities

·        Catering to students of varied backgrounds.

The department was started as an under Graduate (UG) department with Sr. Magdelene as the head. One of the pioneers is Ms. Shakuntala Abhiraman from 1953 – 1966, she has made valuable contribution to the growth of the department. The post Graduate course was started in the department in the year 1964. From then on the department grew from strength to strength under the able stewardship of dedicated faculty like Sr. Juliana, Sr. Susan, Dr. Thangamani, Dr. Meen N. Swamy, Sr. Leony, Dr. Evelyn Chandrasekaran, Dr. Nalinakshi Madhavamurthy and Dr. Rukmani Sridharan. At present Dr. Savithri Sankaran is the Head of the P.G. section and Dr. Felbin C. Kennedy is the Head of the U.G. section.

Alumnae of the department occupy high and responsible positions such as Professors, Consultants in Education and Software, Research Fellows in the country and abroad.

An Additional section for B.Sc. Mathematics was introduced in the academic year 1993 – 94 to meet the increasing demand for the subject. The department also conducted the sequential M.Phil. programme for the college teachers from 1984 to 1986. To the department of Mathematics also goes the credit of setting up the first Computer Centre in the college in the year 1986.

Thanks to the introduction of autonomy and choice bassed credit system (CBCS) in the college, the department has introduced many new, challenging and relevant courses both at the U.G. and P.G. levels keeping in mind the needs of the students.

The department of Mathematics became a Research department in 2003 with the introduction of the M.Phil. programme. The programme came under the autonomous mode in 2005.

The department recalls with gratitude the support and sevices offered to it by great mathematicians like Prof. Sunderrajan of I.I.E.T., Prof. Ramanathan of Pachiappa’s college and Prof. S. Narayanan of Vivekananda College, during the early stages of its growth and development.

The Department also invites visiting professors from abroad to interact and share their knowledge with the postgraduate and M.Phil students and also the faculty. The department has close links with the Brila Planetarium, Chennai and the Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur (I.I.A Bangalore). Frequent trips are arranged to these places for studies in Astronomy.

The Faculty of the department has also collaborated with other colleges in the city, namely, Quaid de Millet College, MGR Janaki College etc, to share knowledge and resources. The faculty also interacts with the Mathematics department of these colleges on research programmes, refresher courses, workshops and seminars.
