For any academic institution the library is the soul of the establishment. Stella Maris College possesses an excellent Library, which is situated in the heart of the campus. The Library has evolved over the years and is today recognized as one of the premier college libraries in Chennai incorporating the latest technological innovations to make it user friendly and eminently accessible.

Housed in a  3 storied building with ground, mezzanine and top floors the library is well equipped, comfortably furnished and has airy, spacious and well lit interiors. The College Library can accommodate around five hundred users at any given time and follows the open access system. This system allows any student/staff to pick and choose any book they like. The Dewey decimal classification is the system used in the Library. The library provides materials for under-graduates, post-graduates as well as professionals and scholarly researchers.

Under autonomy the college has increased its course offerings to suit the academic demands of the student body. To cope with the rapidly increasing technology used in the library, the staff had to be trained.

The Library has grown and progressed over the years incorporating technological innovations in its day to day working. Library is offering access to online journals, CD-ROM databases, e-mail, and the Internet. Since there are numerous materials available in electronic format, the library provides pointers to the internet reference materials of general interest as well as specialized subject interest. The library has 16 terminals. The collections and its services have grown. Library also provides better access to technology and the library has been very effective in providing assistance to faculty in the effective use of technology.

To know the reading habit of the users, the library has introduced a slot machine which helps us to analyze how well the library is being used.

In this era of knowledge revolution, every Stella Marian(Faculty and Student)  has the latest knowledge and information at her fingertips and the users benefit from various services such as introduction of computerized management of library operation, computer based retrieval of information, computer networking,e-mail, and internet. Training the faculty and students to use the electronic resources in their courses, is also critical to the efficiency of the library. Faculty members from several departments have started to use multimedia materials in teaching. . "Multimedia gives students access to meaning through image." Use of multimedia has doubled or tripled the effectiveness in teaching. The access to the Web and new technology has helped the faculty and students to get information fast.

ALERT SERVICE:
The new arrivals of books and journals and abstracts from the various journals are provided for the benefit of the users.

DISPLAYS :
At the entrance an impressive display board gives information about the library, current news, tit bits, and the latest information.

Charts on current topics and educative articles are periodically displayed with various books on the particular topics near the circulation counter.

COZY CORNER:
Students wanting to spend some quiet time in a soothing ambience and indulge in some light reading occupy the slung back chairs in the carpeted space provided here and a huge display board giving tips on life,also you find two bulletin boards : Career and important newspaper clippings are also displayed daily at this corner.

EXHIBITION SPACE:
The library has a unique feature that has a two-fold effect: the walls provide much needed free exhibition space and the opportunity fordisplay of multifarious artistic talent of the students & staff. This in turn lends a uniquely artistic ambience to the library. The displays are frequently renewed and are on sale.

LECTURES AND ORIENTATIONS : Every year Library orientation is arranged for the first year students where they are shown a video on "How to use the S.M.C Library" and later taken around the library. Library orientation is also given for the new staff. Credit course on library service is offered for the 2nd year students for one year.

We have introduced a Certificate course on "Documentation and Information Science" sponsored by University Grants Commission open to the students of the college. View Syllabus....

Closed on Sundays and all Public Holidays.
